02. Do I need to install a device driver? Are there any drivers to download?

The Sony Optiarc CD / DVD writers are ATAPI-devices. There is no need for special drivers when using operating systems like Linux, MacOS or Windows 9x/ME/NT/2000/XP and Vista, because the drivers are already embedded there. If the DVD writing software does not recognize the drive as a CD / DVD writer or demands a driver, all you need to do is to update this software, please contact the manufacturer of your writing software for updates. There are several different versions of Sony Optiarc DVD writers available for sale. There are bulk versions (cheaper, with no extras), retail versions and bundled versions (with manual and CD, more expensive) with CD / DVD writing software and all accessories. It is up to the customer to decide which version to buy. The writing software only comes with the more expensive versions. If you did not purchase a bundled version, you have to buy the writing software from a computer dealer in addition. The following versions of writing software are supported by our DVD writers in the ND-series:DVD-RAM works at least with Nero InCD version 4.3.20.1. Under Windows XP, DVD-RAM media can also be written without any driver and writing software. In this case, please follow instructions on Microsoft knowledge database www.microsoft.com [article 283588 and 826510]Also required is playback software to view DVD audio and movies. This does not come with the bulk versions of our drives. You can buy playback software at your local dealer in addition. The Sony Optiarc devices were tested successfully with following ones:- Power DVD (http://www.gocyberlink.com)- Win DVD (http://www.intervideo.com)- Cineplayer (http://www.cineplayer.com)- Nero ShowTime (http://www.nero.com) [For Support & Service and also updates their manufacturer is responsible]Please note: In most cases it is not enough to use only windows media player or some kind of freeware player because they do not include the necessary media CODECs.

25. How many times can I change my optical drive region code?

Optical drives are limited in the number of region changes per drive (up to 5 times). When a DVD movie is inserted into an optical drive, the drive reads the region code to determine whether the film was actually manufactured for the region where the film is about to be played. If the region code and the film are not the same, the optical drive changes its code, but only up to five times. The fifth change determines the final setting of the optical drive with regard to regional codes. After this code has been set, the drive can only read DVD movie with the same code as the drive.

14. I use media from diverse brands and get these errors: 'illegal medium' or 'invalid disc'.

Our writers refer to a list of pre-tested media. If inserted media doesn’t match any item on the table, the writer switches to a lower speed. In doing so some media may not be recognized. There is no way to circumvent this test. This is because our writers are designed to achieve the highest possible quality for the respective media. This means that it is possible that various types of media cannot be written at the certified speed and some of them will not be recognized. To maintain the highest speed and security, use only media recommended by Sony Optiarc.

21. Is over-burning possible with Sony Optiarc writers?

All Sony Optiarc CD writers are designed to produce the best possible CD writing results. This means that Sony Optiarc CD writers adhere exactly to any blank CD specifications and test the media use. 80 minute blank CDs stretch the specifications to their limit and are still acceptable. 90 or 99 minute CDs do not adhere to the specifications and are therefore not supported. This also applies to the over writing function. There is no firmware available to change this. However, AD-series and ND-series as well as CD writer NR-9x00 series should be able to burn 90 min medias, but without guarantee.

(Please refer to jumper setting instruction)On the BIOS, is the secondary disabled? (For detailed information on BIOS settings, please contact the PCs manufacturer) Is the secondarys interface cable too long?
Since you have purchased an OEM kit, there is no software and documentation bundled with the product. For IDE cable, you may already have cables in the system and may not need one. You should check the system configuration. For installation assistance, you can check Sony's branded web site for guidance. You can either read the installation instruction at: http://us.sonynec-optiarc.eu/en/support-service/hardware-/-system-installation-guide Or download a visual assistance at: http://sony.storagesupport.com/node/902For software application, you can refer to FAQ at: http://www.sonynec-optiarc.de/en/support-service/faqs2/generelle-probleme/algemeine-fragen-zu-dvd-rom-und-dvd-brennern/are-there-any-drivers-to-download#FY6okbB-ZbPUErTGoGvQxA

23. Why does video playback appears choppy, jerky or stop in the middle?

> Please make sure that DMA is enabled for the optical drive. (Right click on 'My Computer' --> Properties --'Hardware' tab --> 'Device Manager' button --> Double click on 'IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers' --> Double click on the IDE Channel that has optical drive connected to --> Select the 'Advanced Settings' tab --> Transfer Mode field should be set to 'DMA if available').> Jumper setting. If you have two devices on the same IDE cable, then you need to make sure the jumpers on the back of the drives are set appropriately. You will need to set one of the drives in MASTER mode and the other one in SLAVE mode. The drive label on the top of the drive should indicate which is the MASTER or the SLAVE mode. > If the behavior (both video and audio choppy) is consistent with both drives, the problem may be with the system configuration. If the above recommendation doesn't make a difference, you may need to start changing the system configuration. Please, also try to keep your hard- and software up-to-date ( main board chipset, IDE/SATA etc)> The general system slow down could be related to system memory getting low. Please also check available memory from the same task manager window.> Try to update the optical drive to latest firmware
